A colostomy is a surgically created opening in the large bowel. The bowel is brought through the abdominal wall and sutured to the skin. A colostomy can be formed of almost any part of the large bowel, although the most common colostomy sites are on sigmoid and transverse colon. The exact position depends on the medical reason for the surgery. A colostomy diverts the faecal flow. The output, volume and consistency vary in each individual case and on the location of the stoma within the colon. The stoma is red and moist. There are no nerve endings in the stoma and therefore no sensation. A closed pouch is needed to collect the stool.
When the bladder is removed, the patient needs a new way to store and pass urine. Various methods are used. In one common method, the surgeon uses a piece of the person's small bowel to form a new tube through which urine can pass. The ureters are attached to one end, and the other end is brought out through an opening in the abdominal wall. This new opening is called a urostomy, and is for the elimination of urine from the body. The stoma is red and moist; there are no nerve endings in the stoma and therefore no sensation.
A special urostomy stoma appliance will receive urine on an on-going basis.
